THE KINGSPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT IS RUNNING OUT OF ROOM. POLICE CHIEF GALE OSBORNE HAS PRESENTED A PROPOSAL TO CITY LEADERS TO EXPAND THE EXISTING JUSTICE CENTER WHICH HOUSES COURTROOMS, THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND JAIL. THE OPTIONS FOR EXPANSION INCLUDE BUILDING A THIRD FLOOR, CONSTRUCTING A SECTION IN THE ADJACENT PARKING LOT, OR BUILDING TWO FLOORS IN THE ADJACENT PARKING LOT. OSBORNE SAID THE PROJECT WOULD CONSOLIDATE ALL COURT FUNCTIONS UNDER ONE ROOF AND GIVE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT MUCH NEEDED SPACE. KINGSPORT ARCHITECT DON SOLT, WHO DID WORK ON THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, IS PERFORMING A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON THE THREE OPTIONS. HE PLANS TO COME BACK TO THE CITY IN SEVERAL WEEKS WITH MORE INFORMATION AND COST ESTIMATES. THE ADDITIONAL SPACE COULD COST UP TO FIVE MILLION DOLLARS.
