A longtime University of Virginia supporter has given $1.28 million to the marching band at U.Va.’s College at Wise. The Hunter J. Smith Foundation’s gift will allow the Marching Highland Cavaliers to purchase new uniforms and instruments, and grow from 50 members this fall to 100 members by 2012. The contribution also includes money to start a band booster club, according to Richard Galyean, director of bands at the southwest Virginia school. Smith, a Charlottesville resident, has financed numerous U.Va. projects through the foundation. She and her late husband, Carl W. Smith, gave $23 million for the renovation at Scott Stadium and the establishment of a U.Va. marching band. Smith also has donated millions for projects at U.Va.-Wise.
