A GATE CITY DENTIST, WHO’S ACCUSED IN A FATAL BOATING CRASH ON BOONE LAKE, HAS WORKED OUT A DEAL WITH THE PROSECUTION. WRAY CHAFIN WAS CHARGED WITH CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE, NEGLIGENT BOATING, AND FAILURE TO RENDER AID IN A JUNE 2006 BOATING ACCIDENT ON BOONE LAKE THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF 63 YEAR OLD WAYNE CROSS AND LEFT JAMES CLARK INJURED. CHAFIN PLEADED NO CONTEST TO THE CHARGES HE WAS FACING. THE PLEA AGREEMENT WOULD GIVE CHAFIN THREE JAIL SENTENCES TO RUN CONCURRENTLY FOR A MAXIMUM OF TWO YEARS, AND A MINIMUM OF SEVEN MONTHS AND SIX DAYS. RICHARD PECTOL, CHAFIN’S ATTORNEY, SAID HE WOULD SEEK JUDICIAL DIVERSION AND SEEK ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING. CHAFFIN IS FREE ON BOND PENDING HIS NEXT HEARING SET FOR SEPTEMBER.
