A communications company retiree says his health benefits are being cut, despite having a contract that he says covers him for life. After working for Sprint and its preceding companies for 38 years, Haynes Fink retired in 1995 thinking his medical benefits would last forever. But EMBARQ Corporation took over Sprint’s local telephone division last year. Fink says EMBARQ sent him a letter last month saying his health care benefits would end on January First. The company said they are ending benefits for retired Communications Workers of America members who are eligible for Medicare. As many as 14,500 U.S. workers will be affected. But Fink feels like the company broke a promise to him by promising the benefits and then taking them away.
