NEW VIRGINIA LAWS GO INTO EFFECT

No more talking on the cell phone while driving for teenagers in Virginia. New state laws that are aimed at improving highway safety take effect today. The cell phone ban for teenagers under 18 is one of several dozen new laws. Teens can no longer talk, send text messages or take cell phone photos while on Virginia roads. Even handsfree devices aren’t allowed. Teens will only be allowed to make emergency calls. The district and Maryland — as well as 12 other states — already have similar laws. But under Virginia’s cell phone ban, like the state’s seat-belt law, officers can only give a citation for a cell phone offense if they pull over a driver for another violation. Other laws involve booster seats for children younger than eight, more red-light traffic cameras at some intersections, and increases in fees for misdemeanor and felony driving offenses.
