A FORMER JOHNSON CITY EMPLOYEE ACCUSED OF LAUNDERING MONEY FROM THE CITY WON’T BE IN COURT FOR AWHILE LONGER. 54 YEAR OLD DANNY DAVIS IS CHARGED WITH MONEY LAUNDERING, THEFT OVER 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS, FORGERY, AND OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT. DAVIS IS ALLEGED TO HAVE BENEFITTED FROM HIS POSITION BIDDING ON JOBS THROUGH GRAY HOME IMPROVEMENTS, A NON-EXISTENT COMPANY. ONCE THE FAKE COMPANY WON THE BID, DAVIS WOULD ALLEGEDLY HIRE SUBCONSTRACTORS AT AN EVEN LOWER COST TO DO THE JOB. IN HIS JOB, DAVIS WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BIDDING PROCESS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. DAVIS WILL APPEAR IN COURT AGAIN ON OCTOBER 2ND.

ATTEMPTED MURDER CASE CONTINUED

A KINGSPORT WOMAN ACCUSED OF STABBING HER ESTRANGED HUSBAND HAS HAD HER PRELIMINARY HEARING RESET IN GENERAL SESSIONS COURT. 57 YEAR OLD VIRGINIA RUTH JONES IS CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER OF 47 YEAR OLD THOMAS WAYNE JONES AT THEIR HOME ON DOROTHY STREET. THE TWO HAD APPARENTLY BEEN ARGUING WHEN THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE. JONES WILL APPEAR IN COURT AGAIN ON SEPTEMBER 27TH.

BIG STONE GAP MURDER CASE CONTINUED

THE TRIAL FOR A BIG STONE GAP VIRGINIA MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING ANOTHER MAN NEARLY 21 YEARS AGO HAS BEEN CONTINUED, YET AGAIN. 38 YEAR OLD JOHN TERRY IS CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN THE DEATH OF 85 YEAR OLD ODIE DUFF. DUFF WAS STRANGLED AND STABBED TO DEATH IN NOVEMBER OF 1986. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THE MOTIVE WAS ROBBERY. TERRY WASN’T ARRESTED AND CHARGED UNTIL 2002 AFTER DNA FROM THE CRIME SCENE WAS PUT INTO A PRISON DATA BASE AND SHOWED TERRY AS A MATCH. HE WAS 17 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME. WISE COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE TAMMY MCELYEA RECENTLY GRANTED A DELAY TO TERRY’S DEFENSE TEAM, TO ALLOW TIME FOR THEM TO COLLECT TRANSCRIPTS AND PREPARE FOR TRIAL. A NEW TRIAL DATE IS SET FOR JANUARY 7TH.

A TRAIN ACCIDENT IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA HAS CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A GLADE SPRING WOMAN. ACCORDING TO VIRGINIA STATE POLICE, NATASHA LAWSON WAS STRUCK NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF MAPLE STREET AND HILLMAN HIGHWAY AROUND NINE THIRTY LAST NIGHT. AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACCIDENT IS CONTINUING.

TANKER SPILL IN JOHNSON CITY

THE SPILL OF 2-THOUSAND GALLONS OF GASOLINE IN JOHNSON CITY ON TUESDAY KEPT LOCAL EMERGENCY PERSONNEL BUSY MUCH OF THE DAY WHEN A PUNCTURED TANK DUMPED THE FUEL INTO A SUNCREST DRIVE LOT. EMERGENCY MEDICAL, FIRE, AND HAZARDOUS MATERIAL TEAMS FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY WERE DISPATCHED TO THE LOT NEAR RYDER TRUCK RENTAL AND LEASING OFFICE. ACCORDING TO LES LEVOTCH, WASHINGTON COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR, A TRUCK DRIVER WAS BACKING UP HIS VEHICLE TO ATTACH A TANKER WHEN THE TANKER FELL OFF AND PUNCTURED THE FRONT CHAMBER OF THE TANK. LEVOTCH SAID OFFICIALS HAD TO USE FOAM TO CONTAIN THE GAS VAPORS. NO ONE WAS INJURED DURING THE INCIDENT.

TRIAL FOR ANDERSON IS DELAYED

THE SEPTEMBER 4TH TRIAL IN FEDERAL COURT FOR A FORMER WASHINGTON COUNTY TENNESSEE NURSING HOME ADMINISTRATOR ACCUSED OF 1.4 MILLION DOLLARS IN MEDICAID FRAUD HAS BEEN DELAYED. BILLIE ANDERSON, THE EX-OWNER AND OPERATOR OF ANDERSON HEALTHCARE IN GRAY WAS INDICTED IN JUNE ON EIGHT CHARGES OF OBTAINING MEDICAID PAYMENTS BY FRAUD. JUDGE RONNIE GREER GRANTED AN EXTENSION OF ANDERSON’S TRIAL UNTIL SEPTEMBER 18TH. THE JUDGE ALSO EXTENDED HER PLEA BARGAIN DEADLINE UNTIL AUGUST 31ST. HER TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO LAST ABOUT A WEEK.

FINANCIALLY-STRAPPED VIRGINIA INTERMONT COLLEGE IN BRISTOL HAS RECEIVED A SHOT IN THE ARM THANKS TO A GENEROUS DONATION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SCHOOL. THANKS TO THE DONATION BY CHARLES KEESEE, STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE COLLEGE WILL HAVE ACCESS TO MORE SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING. KEESEE FUND TRUSTEES HAVE AGREED TO PROVIDE 200-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO BE USED FOR SCHOLARSHIP TO VI STUDENTS FROM VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA, AND SOUTH CAROLINA. UP TO 5-THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY PER STUDENT WILL BE AWARDED. ACCORDING TO VI PRESIDENT DR. ALTERCATION LEAVES ONE DEAD

AN APPARENT ALTERCATION BETWEEN TWO KINGSPORT ACQUAINTANCES HAS RESULTED IN ONE OF THEM BEING KILLED. SULLIVAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICER ANSWERED A CALL ON BROOKSIDE DRIVE IN REPORTS OF A BURGLARY IN PROGRESS. WHEN DEPUTIES ARRIVED, THE HOMEOWNER, ROY WILSON, TOLD THEM HE HAD SHOT THE OTHER MAN IDENTIFIED AS 24 YEAR OLD TONY SATTEFIELD. AROUND THE SAME TIME, KINGSPORT POLICE RECEIVED A CALL SAYING THE SAME MAN HAD SUFFERED GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO HIS BODY. HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO WELLMONT HOLSTON VALLEY HOSPITAL, WHERE HE LATER DIED. SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE BEING QUESTIONED. NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE. THE INVESTIGATION IS ON GOING.

ACCIDENT KILLS LOCAL MAN

A LATE NIGHT TRAFFIC ACCIDENT HAS CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A BULLS GAP MAN. ACCORDING TO THE TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL, 46 YEAR OLD DWAYNE HUGHES LOST HIS LIFE IN THE 11 P.M. ACCIDENT ON SLATE HILL ROAD IN THE MOORESBURG COMMUNITY. POLICE SAY HE APPARENTLY TRIED TO MANEUVER AROUND A CURVE, AND LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE. THE CAR FLIPPED SEVERAL TIMES. HUGHES WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

KINGSPORT POLICE LOOK FOR HELP

THE KINGSPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE FROM ANYONE WHO WAS IN THE AREA OF INTERSTATE 26 NEAR MEADOWVIEW PARKWAY AND SAW A PURPLE OR BLACK FORD MUSTANG EAST BOUND ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE CAR COLLISION WHICH RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF ONE OF THE OCCUPANTS. A CAR EAST BOUND ON THE INTERSTATE WAS CUT OFF BY THE FORD PRIOR TO THE FORD LEAVING THE ROADWAY AND THE OCCUPANTS OF THIS VEHICLE MAY HAVE INFORMATION THAT IS NEEDED. THE SEARCH FOR A BUCHANAN COUNTY VIRGINIA MAN ACCUSED OF ABDUCTING HIS GIRLFRIEND, SEXUALLY ASSAULTING HER AND SHOOTING HER THREE TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND HAS ENDED. 28 YEAR OLD LARRY BOYD WAS FOUND DEAD BY KENTUCKY STATE POLICE. BOYD IS ALLEGED TO HAVE TAKEN THE WOMAN AT GUNPOINT FROM HER FRIEND’S HOME IN DICKENSON COUNTY. SHE TRIED TO ESCAPE AND RAN INTO A CONVENIENCE STORE FOR HELP AND THAT’S WHEN HE ALLEGEDLY LEANED OVER THE COUNTER IN THE STORE AND SHOT HER IN THE SHOULDER. SHE WAS SHOT AGAIN IN THE LEG AS SHE ATTEMPTED TO RUN AWAY. BOYD THEN REPORTEDLY FORCED HER INTO HIS CAR AND DROVE TO PIKE COUNTY KENTUCKY, WHERE HE ALLEGEDLY TOOK THE VICTIM TO A WOODED AREA AND RAPED HER. THE WOMAN WAS SHOT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AS SHE TRIED TO RUNAWAY. THE VICTIM WAS TREATED FOR HER INJURIES AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL AND RELEASED. AUTHORITIES SAID BOYD HAD A CRIMINAL HISTORY.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGNS ARE KICKING OFF IN THE TRI CITIES AT THE END OF THE MONTH. THE UNITED WAY OF KINGSPORT HOPES TO RAISE 3.45 MILLION DOLLARS BY NOVEMBER. IN ORDER TO REACH THE GOAL, CAMPAIGN CHAIR RICK WITT SAY HE WILL FOCUS ON RECRUITING NEW ARRIVALS IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY. MEANWHILE, JOHNSON CITY’S GOAL IS TWO MILLION DOLLARS WHILE BRISTOL IS AIMING AT RAISING A LITTLE OVER A MILLION DOLLARS. ALSO, WASHINGTON COUNTY VIRGINIA HAS A GOAL OF A HALF-A-MILLION.

A SCOTT COUNTY VIRGINIA MAN ACCUSED OF SENDING EXPLICIT SEX VIDEOS TO A MINOR OVER THE INTERNET IS SCHEDULED TO BE ARRAIGNED TOMORROW IN GENERAL DISTRICT COURT. 65 YEAR OLD JAMES JENNINGS IS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF COMPUTER SOLICITATION OF A CHILD UNDER 15 YEARS OF AGE. THE ARREST CAME AS A RESULT OF A JOINT INVESTIGATION BETWEEN THE SCOTT COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND THE MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE. INSIDE JENNING’S HOME, POLICE ALLEGEDLY FOUND EVIDENCE INCLUDING A COMPUTER AND WEB CAMERA. MEANWHILE, THE MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS IN THE PROCESS OF FILING ADDITIONAL CHARGES AS WELL. LEE COUNTY DRUG ROUNDUP

COURT DATES WILL BE SET SOON FOR NEARLY 39 PEOPLE ARRESTED ON 90 COUNTS OF DRUG DISTRIBUTION IN LEE COUNTY VIRGINIA. OPERATION “STAND II” GOT UNDERWAY FRIDAY FOLLOWING INDICTMENTS HANDED DOWN BY A GRAND JURY. THE FIRST DRUG ROUNDUP OCCURRED IN JANUARY WHEN 111 PEOPLE WERE HAULED INTO JAIL. SHERIFF GARY PARSONS SAID NEARLY ALL THE CHARGES ARE THE RSULT OF HAND-TO-HAND DRUG BUYS THAT WERE RECORDED BY HIS OFFICERS. OVER 20 HAVE BEEN ARRESTED SO FAR AND THE REMAINING WILL HAVE THEIR INFORMATION SENT TO OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN HOPES OF MAKING AN ARREST SOON.

GREENEVILLE APARTMENT FIRE

A FIRE AT A GREENEVILLE APARTMENT COMPLEX HAS LEFT THREE FAMILIES HOMELESS. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT AT BLUE SPRINGS VILLAGE APARTMENTS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. IT CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE SECOND FLOOR OF ONE APARMENT BUILDING. THREE OF THE EIGHT APARMENTS WERE OCCUPIED AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE. THE APARTMENT BUILDING WAS JUST OPENED THIS YEAR. INVESTIGATORS ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE AND WHERE IT STARTED. THE RED CROSS IS HELPING THE DISPLACED FAMILIES.

THERE’S ALSO PLANS FOR A 70-THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT TWO STORY EXPANSION AT THE WEST ENTRANCE, A 15-THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT EXPANSION AT THE NORTH ENTRANCE, A NEW CLOCK TOWER, A FOOD COURT, NEW LIGHTING, NEW FLOORING, FOUR TO FIVE NEW RESTAURANT AND RETAIL BUILDINGS AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING. ONCE THE WORK IS COMPLETED, THE NEW KINGSPORT TOWN CENTER WILL CONTAIN NEARLY 530-THOUSAND SQUARE FEET OF RETAIL SHOPPING SPACE. A FORMER ELIZABETHTON BUSINESSMAN CONVICTED EARLIER THIS MONTH ON CHARGES OF METHAMPHETAMINE HAS LOST HIS HOME. JOE COFFMAN WAS FOUND GUILTY ON AUGUST 8TH OF CONSPIRACY TO DISTRIBUTE AND POSSESS 500 GRAMS OR MORE OF METH. HE WAS ALSO FOUND GUILTY IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT IN GREENEVILLE OF KNOWINGLY AND INTENTIONALLY DISTRIBUTING METH. THE SAME FEDERAL JURY AGREED COFFMAN’S HOUSE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE FORFEITED. HIS HOME HAS BEEN PLACED UNDER CUSTODY OF THE U.S. MARSHALS SERVICE UNTIL ALL THIRD PARTY CLAIMS AGAINST THE PROPERTY ARE DECIDED. COFFMAN WAS ONE OF NINE PEOPLE WHO WERE INDICTED. HE WILL BE SENTENCED IN FEDERAL COURT ON DECEMBER 3RD.

ONE RETIREE SPEAKING OUT AGAINST EMBARQ

A communications company retiree says his health benefits are being cut, despite having a contract that he says covers him for life. After working for Sprint and its preceding companies for 38 years, Haynes Fink retired in 1995 thinking his medical benefits would last forever. But EMBARQ Corporation took over Sprint’s local telephone division last year. Fink says EMBARQ sent him a letter last month saying his health care benefits would end on January First. The company said they are ending benefits for retired Communications Workers of America members who are eligible for Medicare. As many as 14,500 U.S. workers will be affected. But Fink feels like the company broke a promise to him by promising the benefits and then taking them away.
