Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has announced legislative proposals to guard against identity theft and credit fraud. One of the bills announced by Kaine would require companies to notify consumers if their personal information is accidentally made public. Such information includes Social Security, driver’s license and account numbers. The other measure would allow Virginians to put a freeze on their credit reports. That would ensure that no new credit accounts are opened in the name of a consumer who may be at risk of identity theft. Kaine says the proposals strike a reasonable balance between consumer protection and the legitimate interests of the business community.
