An attorney for an escaped inmate accused of killing a hospital security guard and a sheriff’s deputy in Blacksburg said the defense will focus on why the crime occurred. In his opening statement, defense attorney Thomas Blaylock asked members of the Washington County Virginia Circuit Court jury to keep an open mind until all of the evidence has been presented in the case of William Morva, who is charged with capital murder. Blaylock said Morva suffered from physical and mental difficulties and had felt abandoned as he was held in jail without bond in August 2006 after being arrested on attempted robbery charges. Blaylock spoke after Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brad Finch said Morva launched a deadly shooting spree after knocking out a deputy and taking his handgun. The case was moved to Abingdon after a jury could not be seated in Montgomery County because many of the prospective jurors had relationships with principals in the case.
