Closing arguments are set today in Washington County Virginia Circuit Court in Abingdon in the capital murder case of an escaped inmate convicted of killing a hospital security guard and a sheriff’s deputy. William Morva faces either death or life in prison for killing security guard Derrick McFarland and sheriff’s Corporal Eric Sutphin. Morva’s friends testified yesterday that he was a caring, gentle person when he was in high school. Defense attorneys have sought life in prison without parole rather than the death penalty for Morva. Two friends said they were shocked when they heard of his arrest in the August 2006 killings.
