Lightning disabled a chair lift at Ghost Town in the Sky in Maggie Valley North Carolina, leaving nearly 40 riders stranded for about two hours. Sales and marketing manager David King says rescue workers lowered ten riders to the ground using a rope ladder system. Another 28 riders got back to the ground after repair crews replaced damaged components to the chair lift power supply. Wendy Whiteside of Knoxville, Tennessee, says she and her family were about ten chairs from the top when the ride stopped. She says while the experience was frustrating and scary, she also called it exciting. Whiteside says she’ll come back to the park and definitely reconsider the chair lift. King expects the chairs to be open on today. An inspector with the state Department of Labor’s Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau will be at the park this morning to inspect the lift.
