A charred area of downtown Spruce Pine, North Carolina, will be closed until at least tomorrow as authorities investigate whether two weekend fires were intentionally set. The mayor declared a state of emergency after a fire early Saturday destroyed a building that housed offices and a church. Fire Chief David Hughes says crews were mopping up at that scene when they were called to a new fire about three blocks away Saturday night. Flames consumed a thrift store, a garage and Spruce Pine’s historic train depot. Firefighters from every department in Mitchell County, which borders Tennessee, and others from Avery, Yancy and McDowell counties helped fight the blaze. Mayor Wes Foy closed the area to the public while the State Bureau of Investigation’s Arson Task Force examines the scene. Spruce Pine is an old railroad and mining town of about 2,000 people roughly 35 miles southeast of Johnson City, Tennessee.
