The governor’s marijuana task force has made an early harvest in Cocke County. A crop estimated to be worth a half-(m)-million dollars was burned at the county highway garage. A Highway Patrol helicopter pilot spotted the plants growing about five miles east of Newport on Monday. Lieutenant Terry Botts guided a ground crew, which cut down the marijuana and carried it away. The Safety Department says the seizure was the largest in Cocke County this year and may be the largest in the state so far in 2007. It wasn’t immediately known if there were any suspects or if the land owners were involved.
