There are hearings next week about whether to close two northeast Tennessee offices of the Farm Service Agency. The local FSA offices distribute federal funds to farmers in commodity support payments, credit, conservation, disaster and loan programs. With the tobacco price support system scrapped, fewer visits are being made to the offices and the decline could lead to closure. A hearing on the Johnson County office will be next Monday at Seven O’clock and a similar hearing will follow next Tuesday at the Carter County FSA office. It will also start at 7 p.m. and both will take place at the county courthouses. If the offices are closed, area farmers would have to drive to Blountville because it would be the closest FSA office in the region.
