THE INVESTIGATION INTO A FATAL CRASH IN SCOTT COUNTY VIRGINIA THAT CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A KINGSPORT TEEN IS NEARING COMPLETION. ACCORDING TO THE VIRGINIA STATE POLICE, 18 YEAR OLD JUSTIN THOMPSON WAS KILLED AFTER THE MOTORCYCLE HE WAS RIDING RAN OFF THE ROADWAY AND STRUCK A GUARDRAIL. THE TEEN WAS THROWN AGAINST A TREE. THE INVESTIGATION SO FAR REVEALS EXCESSIVE SPEED WAS A KEY FACTOR. THOMPSON WAS BEING PURSUED BY TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL TROOPER KYLE CANTWELL AFTER BEING CLOCKED AT 140 MPH ON INTERSTATE 81. FAMILY MEMBERS ARE UPSET AT LAW ENFORCEMENT AND BELIEVE CANTWELL SHOULD HAVE BACKED OFF AND DEALT WITH THE OFFENSE IN A SAFER MANNER. CANTWELL REMAINS ON LEAVE WITH PAY PENDING THE OUTCOME OF AN INVESTIGATION. THE FINDINGS OF THE INVESTIGATION WILL BE PRESENTED TO THE COMMONWEALTH ATTORNEY’S OFFICE.
