TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 81 IS BACK TO NORMAL TODAY, ALMOST 30 HOURS AFTER A TWO-TRUCK CRASH BROUGHT THE BUSY ROADWAY TO ITS KNEES. ON WEDNESDAY, BOTH NORTH AND SOUTHBOUND LANES WERE CLOSED AT ONE TIME WHEN A TANKER TRUCK CARRYING SULFURIC ACID WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER TRACTOR TRAILER THAT CROSSED FROM THE NORTHBOUND LANES. THE TANKER AND ITS CARGO REMAINED AT REST UNTIL THE POTENTIALLY-VOLATIVE CHEMICAL WAS OFFLOADED TO ANOTHER TRUCK THAT CAME IN FROM ALABAMA. TANKER DRIVER LON GUTTIERREZ OF TEXAS WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FROM BRISTOL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER. JOSEPH WEBB OF ROANOKE VIRGINIA, THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER TRUCK THAT WAS CARRYING COSMETICS, WAS CHARGED WITH RECKLESS DRIVING.
