Federal transportation officials are investigating a plane crash in SMYTH COUNTY Virginia that killed both people aboard. Sergeant Michael Conroy of the Virginia State Police said the
pilot contacted the flight center in Atlanta at around 10:40 a.m.
yesterday to say that he was having icing problems. The plane
crashed in a mountainous area moments later. The crash site is about a mile off a dirt road in the Jefferson National Forest near Rural Retreat. Conroy said “it looked like it went straight down.”
He said the victims were a man and a woman who live outside the
United States. Their names had not been released, pending
notification of family. Conroy said Federal Aviation Administration officials arrived at the scene yesterday and he expected the National Transportation Safety Board would begin investigating the crash today.
