A study concludes Virginia is lacking beds needed to treat mentally ill patients. The study by the Treatment Advocacy Center says there is a national shortage of nearly 100,000 impatient beds for the mentally ill. Experts say 50 public psychiatric beds per 100,000 population is a minimum number. According to the study, Virginia had slightly more than 22 beds per 100,000. The study says 42 of the 50 states had less than half the minimum number needed.
