On top of old Smoky, there’s snow and ice. Because of that, U.S. Highway 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is closed for the first time this season. The Newfound Gap Road running from Gatlinburg to Cherokee, N.C., is shut down along with the road to Clingman’s Dome, Tennessee’s highest point. In Gatlinburg, there was a little snow yesterday afternoon but it did not stick. The temperature in the resort town was 33 just before sunset. Snow showers are forecast for upper elevations of East Tennessee from the Virginia border through the Smokies. Between two to four inches was expected on U.S. 441. Other smaller roads have already closed for the winter. For tomorrow’s Vanderbilt-Tennessee football game in Knoxville, the forecast is sunny with some clouds and highs in the upper 50s.
