A federal appeals court has upheld the convictions of two Newport police officers in the shakedown of an illegal immigrant for cash during a traffic stop. Sergeant James Roach Jr. was convicted last year of depriving the victim of his rights by stealing 100 from his wallet. He was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison and a year of supervised release. Sergeant Patrick Sheldon was convicted of being an accessory after the fact for helping Roach cover up the crime. He was ordered to serve two months and two years on probation. Both officers also were ordered to pay $100 in restitution to the victim and complete 150 hours of community service. The 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati rejected their appeal.
